How many of us have watched a basketball game on TV and thought, “If I was just a little taller, I could probably do that…”. I know I’ve certainly overestimated my abilities once or twice! But while the players seem to possess unlimited choices on the the court, the same choices you and I have off the court aren’t always available to them.
We sat down with professional basketball player David Hawkins of the NBA, EuroLeague, and currently the BIG3, to discuss the challenges facing pro athletes as they try to keep themselves in peak physical condition.
“CBD has made a difference in my life as far as taking prescription and over-the-counter drugs out of my daily routine.”
How is your approach to managing pain different now than it was 5 years ago?
Well now when I start to feel pain I use less Tylenol and ibuprofen before and after games. I’ve been using CBD oil mostly under my tongue or right on the actual spot that’s bothering me.
How did you first hear about CBD?
I first heard about CBD on the internet and and people just talking about it but not know exactly what is was or where it came from. There’s a lot of misconceptions about CBD getting you high or feeling a buzz from it but that’s not the case at all, even though it comes from the cannabis plant.
Why did you choose to add CBD to your daily routine?
I chose to use CBD because it did make me feel better – I could see the difference – and I know it’s better for me with less side effects from it. I don’t have to worry about my liver shutting down on me years from now. It’s all natural and personally, it makes me feel good – CBD gets the job done.
Why do you think all professional athletes should have open access to CBD during the season?
I think professional athletes should at least have the choice to use what they feel and know is best for their body. If you get in an accident or get surgery, they give you Percocet. I mean, scientifically the breakdown of it is no different than taking heroin so people can get addicted to high doses of opioids. It’s one of the things you can take for the pain right away, but then it causes an addiction which in the long term can ultimately kill you or injure you really bad.
Why do you think CBD is a good choice for athletes?
CBD is all natural, doesn’t get you high, it’s not a stimulant, it’s better for your body, and CBD makes me feel better. As athletes, we put our bodies through a lot over the years – we should be able to take are of ourselves using products that both we and our doctors feel are best. And for many of us, CBD products have been the answer. The Big 3 understands this and has made a positive impact in giving us that option. I’m sure people are still going to use Tylenol or other pain medications, but everything done in moderation is okay – once it gets out of hand, that’s when it becomes a problem.
There are many CBD options out there – why do you like Modern Medicinals?
I got introduced to Modern Medicinals early on and once I use something and it works, there’s no point in changing or switching up. I like Mm specifically because of the oil – you can rub it in during massages, you can get straight to the point of the pain, and you can also drop it under your tongue to get into your bloodstream that way. I liked having that type of variety – it’s not like a lotion where you can only put it on topically. The oil you can take it orally and put it on the skin. I’m very happy with Modern Medicinals and I still use it to this day. And I’m thankful because it’s made a difference in my life as far as taking prescription and over-the-counter drugs out of my daily routine.
